SIAMS REPORTS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools):

As Church of England Primary Schools each school has an inspection conducted by the National Society every 5 years to judge the schools Christian Distinctiveness.

The inspection is of as equal importance as OFSTED and looks at Leadership, Standards, Teaching of RE (VA schools) and Christian Distinctiveness which provide an overall effectiveness grading for the school.

How we teach: Phonics, Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling, Reading Schemes used across the federation:

In all our academies in the federation we use the following schemes and resources to teach phonics daily across the federation in KS1 (and KS2 targeted children as identified) and challenge the children in their reading skills.

Letter & Sounds

Jolly Phonics

For SEND children we use the following synthetic phonics as a 1:1 support programme or small groups:

Sound Discovery

Beat Dyslexia

Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GAPS) is taught based on the learning objectives and spelling lists set out in the Primary National Curriculum 2014, you can access these at the following link:

Punctuation and Spelling (GAPS)

We have also published two simple guides to help parents in understanding the jargon and definitions we use around grammar, these can be found in our parents section of this website.

The following reading schemes are used in our academies schools:

Oxford Reading Tree

Fireflies

Treetops

Older or more able reading read:

In addition to this children will undertake:

Mathematics:

Maths is a priority of our federation and we have worked hard to develop the numeracy skills of all our pupils.  Every child is expected to learn two important strands of maths.

Children are asked to learn times tables from Yr1 and it is expected all children will be capable in knowing all tables and related facts by the end of Yr4.

Children also are encouraged to know division facts, family of facts and move into decimals, fractions and larger numbers once they are confident with all tables to 12 x 12.

We have an established rewards programme for children achieving their tables.

We also recommend parents us the app Percy Parker as this encourages children to learn their table in a fun way!

Problem Solving, Reasoning and Investigations are key to developing our children’s confidence and skills in applying themselves in maths.

Children have daily challenges in maths to encourage them to stretch their confidence and learning; they also have structured or guided problem solving sessions and open ended mathematical investigations to develop their reasoning capabilities.

To aid parents in understanding what is taught in maths and when whilst their child is in school we have created a simple Parent’s Guide to Maths that outlines the written calculations we teach from Yr1-Yr6 and explains the reasoning behind them.

This can be found on our website in our parents section.

We are also continually finding new on line resources for children and parents to use at home that make maths fun.  Please ask for our latest list!
